Our D4 Field of Dreams . . . In Memory Of . . .
I had the pleasure of meeting George at Everglades a few summers ago when he was attending a skills day for rec D4. He shared he had been in rec D3 managing and was joining our rec D4 family. Although he did not manage in each season, it was always nice to see him at the fields when he did. He always greeted me with a smile and, even had me give a boosting morale speech to this season's Hornets one morning- they did great! btw. His Hornet's team was very thoughtful of George and his wife facing their challenges. One player created the poster seen below. I shot the winning team from that game and emailed it to George extending our thoughts and prayers. It does take a village!
There were quite a number of people who gathered together with Don Miller's family to remember this wonderful soul. I was honored to have written a poem for the plaque presented to his family... A fitting plaque in the shape of home plate- now he is home.
Sometimes events within the rec D4 family are bittersweet- Don Miller, which was also my Dad's name, passed away New Years Eve- he visited the softball fields relentlessly- he never gave up, he was always concerned with how WE were- not him! It was almost the end of Fall season and I recall the last time he came to the field- he could barely stay steady, his speech was barely recognizable- I was worried about him driving his self to the field in his golf cart- ah, he replied, I gotta see all my buddies and you. He offered to buy me a beverage, a snack... I called him Daddy. My Dad had passed away January 2, 2007. So, this was bittersweet for me for a number of reasons. He thought it was sweet he shared the same name with my Dad- he had such a great sense of humor he introduced me to his son as his illegitimate sister, but don't tell your Mom- We all know the sense of humor he had! We will all miss him dearly.
He was a great softball player and short stop. I never got to see him play but the stories are many about Don! Equally, spread are stories about him fishing and golfing. He never quit at anything he did- even as he headed toward his "last inning" ....
Rest easily our friend, may your soul be at peace in the heavens- I know you will be there.... From the entire D4 family we extend our deepest sympathy to Don's wife and family. .... Jacque
