The 2023 Winter Season D4 Champs!
Congrats to Terry Penrod and his Thunder team! They snagged the season effortlessly with twenty wins and just two losses... The opening game, in January, previewed what was to come as they played the Jazz team in their typical, thunderous way- Although they began the game with zero runs in the first inning, they scored the next four innings. The last inning they did not score any runs while Jazz only scored the first and last innings of the game. Thunder beat Jazz 8-13.
Looking back over the season Spurs gave them a good game BEATING Thunder 13-11. John Cilento, manager and winning pitcher, along with his team scored in 4 innings while Thunder scored in six so, great defensive playing Spurs! Both teams hit well at 23 hits each. The Spurs would show their hand playing this season clinching second place!
The second loss Thunder had was to the Clippers managed by Larry Owens. Jack Kleffman pitched a great game to this stormy team as they beat them, 14-8! Thunder only scored in 5th and 7th innings. Clippers only scored in 3 innings but this time their bats mattered- 22 hits for Clippers, 17 hits for Thunder.....
Overall, pitcher, Gary Allen, showed his determination thorughout the season pitching fine games while all the team hit the crap out of the ball relentlessly.... I guess that is why they live up to their team name- Thunder:) Will Thunder make a roaring finish to win the final play off game Thursday, April 13th?
Throughout the winter season Thunder would win twenty games although there were in fact some close games to consider... Along with three mercy games ... Games ending in the 5th- Hawks 8-23; Bucks 1-16; Heat 0-15! The Heat loss was most amazing to me as they clinched the D4 league championship last Fall season. They lost the tournament unfortunately to the Suns.. They had great players this Winter but just could not get their game in the right gear this time They began with nine consecutive wins this season but after that faltered ...
The close games included Warriors with Terry Fritts precise pitching. Thunder would come back in the 8th, winning 11-4 with 22 hits to Warriors 21 hits. Three additional close games would indicate that any team could be challenged. The last place, Kings, 21st place, Pelicans, and 22nd place Sixers would battle them- Pitching for Kings and Sixers, Bill MacCarroll would help the cause ... Kings 13-15, and Sixers 9/10 - both great games regardless of their defeat. The Pelicans pitcher, Bobby Lyons, would join MacCarroll in this pitching game although losing 16-17. Pelicans hit well with 27 hits, Thunder hit 24.... Hey! You just never know who is stepping up to the plate! And that, is why we love this game!
